The Emperor Collection is made up of fountain pens which use Shishiai-Togidashi Maki-e (polished relief). This is the simultaneous use of several techniques of maki-e: Taka-Maki-e of silver and 24 carat gold, high-relief technique where Urushi and charcoal powder are used to reveal the pattern in high relief. This method creates a three-dimensional pattern with living depth, and Hira Maki-e where gold or silver powder is sprinkled on the pattern and then fixed with a new layer of polished lacquer. After drying the pattern appears by charcoal polishing.
The Namiki Emperor Owl fountain pen features Rankaku and Togidashi-Taka Maki-e techniques. Rankaku technique is where the design is created using small pieces or powdered quail shells. It is embedded into the lacquered surface and coated with lacquer before the surface of the lacquer is burnished to reveal the design. In this pen the owl silhouette is done with this technique. Togidashi-Taka Maki-e technique on completion of back ground and other elements of the scene using Togidashi Maki-e techniques, greater emphasis is provided to the main design through the use of other materials such as lacquer and charcoal powder. The design is then finished using the same techniques as those used in Hira(flat) Maki-e. The result is an impression of stately opulence. In Japan the owl brings luck and offers protection from suffering.
The extraordinary No.50 18ct gold nib with the image of Mount Fuji completes each model and is available in Fine/Medium, Medium and Broad sizes.
